Use comments to connect with your community
Once you’ve established your mission statement and gained fans, you’ll want to connect with them in fun, positive ways. Comments are designed as a way to deepen the connection with your audience. This lesson will teach you about the different features available to help you to keep your community positive and safe for you and your fans.

Promote quality comments
Comments are a great place to get direct feedback from your viewers, answer their questions, and overall create a community and conversation around your videos. Here are some specific things you can do to achieve that:
Heart your favorite comments
- When you you “heart” a comment, viewers will see your channel icon with a small red heart, and may receive a notification that you loved what they wrote.
- This is a quick and effective way to build fan loyalty, and to show your appreciation to viewers.
Pin comments to the top of your feed
- Clarify something from your video.
- Ask your audience a specific question.
- Tease a specific moment or easter egg.
- Pin a fan comment that stood out to you to highlight them.
- Thank your viewers for watching.
Pinning lets you highlight what comment your fans see first when watching your video. You can either pin your own comment, or a fan comment. Pinning your own comment is a great way to
Reply to comments
- This may seem obvious, but replying to comments shows your audience that you’re listening and interested in their feedback.
- Use replies to answer fan questions or thank them individually.
Find comments using new filters (Currently only available in Studio desktop)
- Subscriber status
- Channel member status
- The number of subscribers the commenter has
- Comments that contain questions so you can respond more easily
- Your response status -- to only see comments you have or haven’t responded to

Handle hurtful or inappropriate comments
As you probably know, not all comments are positive or appropriate. YouTube recognizes how incredibly important it is for you to keep your community positive and safe, and for you to maintain your own well-being. Because of this, we’ve created tools that can help at the comment level and your channel level.
Here are actions you can take at the comment level
Remove the comment and all of its replies.
- Do this by clicking the three dots next to the comment, and select “Remove”. You can also do this from within YouTube Studio in the “Comments” tab.
- If the comment violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines, it will be removed.Hide the user.
- Doing this blocks a specific user from posting comments on any of your videos
- You can block a user from commenting straight from their inappropriate comment or in the “Community” tab in your channel Settings. Users are not alerted when you block them.
Here are actions you can take at the channel level
Set upload defaults.
From your YouTube Settings, go to the Community tab, then “Defaults”. From here, you can choose to
- Allow all comments.
- Hold potentially inappropriate comments for review.
- Hold all comments for review.
- Disable comments.
- Note: If you hold any comments for review they will not appear publicly until you’ve reviewed them.
The setting you choose applies to all of your new videos, and you can also select these defaults on an individual video basis in the “Advanced” tab.
- If you want to change this setting for older videos you do so through bulk actions in Studio on desktop.
Create a blocked words list.
- Sometimes people may use words or phrases that you don’t want to see on your channel.
- From channel Settings, go to the Community tab where you’ll see a section for “Blocked words” and add words or phrases that you don’t want to appear in your comments section.
- When someone tries to comment using a blocked word, it won’t appear publicly and will be held for your review.
Add comment moderators.
- Add trusted community members to flag comments on your videos for removal.
- The comments they flag are removed from the public comments section, and can be found in your “Held for Review” queue as "Flagged by moderator" until you approve or remove them.
- You can add a moderator in your channel Settings under “Community”, or from the “Comments” tab in YouTube Studio.
Turn off comments completely.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by comments and these tools, you can choose always turn off all comments by selecting “Disable comments” in your Community defaults.
- This will only affect new videos, but you can change the setting on old videos through bulk actions in Studio on desktop.
