Manage content at scale
While everyone with a channel on YouTube can use the Creator Studio dashboard, only content owners who've been approved for Content ID can access the Content Manager CMS. This tool can save you time when managing large repositories of videos, assets, or collections of channels across multiple YouTube channels.
Some of the most powerful actions you can perform with Content Manager relate to managing Content ID assets. The CMS allows content owners to aggregate reporting across channels, and to set and apply policies across channels and assets. Here’s a comparison of both interfaces:

* The CMS’s adjusted monthly reports contain data that is more accurate than information from YouTube Analytics. In nearly all cases, when the numbers in web and downloadable reports are in conflict, the downloadable data, found only in CMS, will be more correct.
Administer content ownership
Content ID is YouTube’s system for protecting the intellectual property of copyright holders and content owners at scale. Content owners that qualify for Content ID are granted access to Content Manager.
The reports that identify user-generated content—the videos uploaded by third parties that contain your intellectual property—are accessed through the Content Manager CMS.
Media organizations, movie studios, television networks, and music labels can all benefit enormously from Content ID’s ability to automatically scour videos uploaded to YouTube for matches to the visual clips, audio, and even background sounds you assert ownership of through Content ID—and Content Manager automatically surfaces potential violations.
You can claim and administer your assets through Content ID, and monitor their usage through the CMS, to maximize revenue and streamline payments to contributors.
Manage multiple channels and roles
Imagine that you are employed by a television studio that produces many shows, and each program should have its own YouTube channel. Or, you work for a record label that manages many artists, and each musician wants their own YouTube page. Since a single media company owns the rights to all of those shows, or all of those songs, it makes good business sense for all those YouTube channels to be administered from a single account—and that’s one of the primary functions of Content Manager.
The account switcher function, accessed by clicking on the icon in the top-right of every YouTube page, allows a single user to access the back end of different channels’ Creator Studio dashboards. Or, if the user has been granted CMS access, they can click on the “building” icon to access Content Manager.
When logged into a channel account, users can only manage content on that channel. When logged into an owner account—when the “building” logo is in the top-right corner of the page—you can access, analyze, and update multiple channels, as well as assets.
- Channel managers can only access the Creator Studio: they can upload and edit content, and can access YouTube Analytics for a single channel.
- Content owners can access the Content Manager: they can be given access to assets, Content ID policies, and hard financials.
Administrators can assign very granular permissions to any user in your organization, granting access to different data based on roles. For example, your legal team might need to get at different reports than your accounting department.
Invited Content Manager users may be permitted to perform (or may be restricted from performing) any combination of the following tasks:
- Manage video uploads.
- Add, remove, and change permissions for linked channels.
- Manage Content ID claims, assets, and reference files.
- Manually claim videos with Content ID.
- Access Analytics and reports.
- Deliver video, metadata, and references.
- Set content owner-level settings, permissions, defaults, and manage users.
- Access revenue data.
- Perform bulk actions.
The users and roles in your CMS should be reviewed often. When someone changes roles or leaves your company, it’s important to adjust their access level—or remove them as a user.

YouTube Analytics is a powerful data reporting interface for managing a single channel. Content Manager's data analysis interface contains all the same information, but allows you to answer bigger questions with greater precision, using data aggregated from multiple channels.
Key data analysis tasks that can only be performed through the CMS include:
- Track asset performance to see how specific assets are performing, based on metrics like viewer engagement or ad revenue. You can filter assets by partner-uploaded or user-generated content to keep track of how much Content ID contributes to your revenue.
- Track channel performance when you’re managing multiple channels through the Content Manager.

- Download reports to give your business the flexibility to adjust how you want to analyze your data. Large enterprises that prefer to conduct analysis in their own databases can download reports in CSV format, to analyze with SQL or present as spreadsheets.
