Get your nonprofit onto YouTube
Now that you’re ready to share your story on YouTube, how can you get your channel off the ground? It’s simple to set up your channel, so you can spend your time making the world a better place.
Here are 3 simple steps to get started:
- Create a YouTube channel. It just takes a minute, and you can sign in with a free Google account—including your account for Gmail, Chrome, or another Google service.
- Apply to the Google for Nonprofits program. (Check the eligibility requirements for your country.) Benefits include free versions of some Google products.
- Enroll your YouTube channel in the YouTube for Nonprofits program. This program offers exclusive resources and features to maximize your impact on YouTube.
Once you create your channel, edit the description to include things like your mission statement, so viewers understand your organization’s core values and goals, and your web links and contact information.
- Create a new YouTube channel—from any computer or mobile device.
- Use a Brand Account to create a channel with your organization’s name and decide who’s able to manage it.
- Register with TechSoup to validate your NGO status before applying to Google for Nonprofits.
- Invite viewers to subscribe in your channel description, so they find out when you publish new content.

Make your channel stand out
You can customize your channel to give viewers a great first impression. Your channel design can help viewers recognize your branding and navigate your content.
There are several places to showcase your organization’s branding:
- Be iconic. Upload a channel icon to visually represent your channel on YouTube and other Google sites. For example, you can use your organization’s logo. Just make sure it looks good large and small, since viewers may be coming from a computer or mobile device.
- Capture your uniqueness visually. Upload channel art to be displayed as a banner across the top of your channel. Your channel art can help reinforce your brand identity. Instead of stock photography, consider using actual photos that capture your organization’s ethos.
- Hook your audience. Create a channel trailer to introduce new viewers to your channel. Like a movie trailer, your channel trailer can give a sneak peek of what to expect. Try to hook viewers in the first few seconds and entice them to watch more content on your channel.
After you’ve uploaded videos, these tools can help viewers discover them:
- Organize your content around themes. Try adding sections to highlight certain types of content. For example, you can create sections for popular, recent, or liked uploads. If you have episodic content, you may decide to put a series section near the top of your channel for prime visibility.
